Prolotherapy: Steroid-Free Healing for Ligaments and Tendons

At Weiss Wellness + Beauty, we offer Prolotherapy, a regenerative treatment that leverages your body’s natural healing processes to decrease pain and improve function. Prolotherapy is especially beneficial for those seeking a steroid-free solution to ligament and tendon healing.

What is Prolotherapy?

Prolotherapy involves the injection of a mild irritant solution to stimulate a controlled healing process. By inducing localized inflammation, Prolotherapy initiates a healing cascade that results in the deposition of new collagen. As the new collagen matures, it strengthens the cartilage, ligament, or tendon that was injected.

How is Prolotherapy Performed?

Procedure: At Weiss Wellness + Beauty, Prolotherapy is performed with precision and care by Dr. Elise Weiss using advanced ultrasound guidance. This ensures that each injection is placed exactly where it is needed for maximum therapeutic effect. The treatment involves:

Target Identification: Ultrasound is used to locate areas of laxity, degeneration, or injury.

Injection: A specially formulated solution (dextrose, lidocaine, and sarapin) is injected into the affected ligaments, tendons, or joint capsules.

Healing Response: The solution acts as a mild irritant that creates a small, localized inflammatory response—kickstarting the body’s repair process.

Why Not Use Steroids?

Steroid injections are commonly used for joint and muscle pain, but their effects are often temporary—and repeated use can actually weaken the very tissues they aim to help. Steroids suppress inflammation but do not promote healing. In contrast, Prolotherapy encourages tissue growth and structural integrity by triggering a regenerative response. It offers a more sustainable and biologically supportive option for those seeking long-term relief without compromising tissue strength or risking adverse effects associated with corticosteroids.

What Conditions Can Prolotherapy Treat?

Prolotherapy is used to treat recurrent pain, swelling, or fullness involving joints or muscular regions. It is particularly effective for conditions such as:

  • Tendonosis and Tendonitis
  • Ligament Injuries
  • Joint Instability
  • Chronic Musculoskeletal Pain
  • Knee, Shoulder, Elbow and Ankle Pain

What Are the Risks?

Prolotherapy is considered an extremely safe procedure when performed by a trained professional. As with any injection, there is a minimal risk of:

Infection
Bleeding
Bruising
Temporary increase in pain or soreness

Dr. Weiss follows strict protocols to ensure sterile technique and reduce risk. Because Prolotherapy uses a natural, drug-free solution, adverse reactions are rare, and the body typically tolerates the treatment very well.

Am I a Candidate for Prolotherapy?

You may be a strong candidate for Prolotherapy if you:

  • Suffer from chronic joint or muscle pain
  • Experience swelling, instability, or a sensation of weakness in a joint
  • Have not found relief with physical therapy, medications, or other conventional treatments
  • Are looking for a non-surgical solution to improve mobility and function
  • Want to avoid or delay joint replacement or surgery

A personalized consultation with Dr. Weiss will help determine if Prolotherapy is appropriate for your condition and goals.

Treatment Frequency

The number of sessions required varies depending on the severity and location of your condition. Most patients require a series of 4 to 6 treatments, spaced 1–2 weeks apart. Some may need fewer sessions, while more complex or long-standing issues may require a longer course of therapy. Dr. Weiss will tailor your treatment plan based on your progress and response.

Pain and Post-Procedure Care

During Treatment:

The injection itself is mildly to moderately uncomfortable, and a brief muscle ache or spasm is normal when the solution is injected.

Pain: The injection is considered mildly to moderately painful.

Patients typically experience a “flare” of soreness for 2-3 days post-injection. Mild pain medication, such as Tylenol, is usually sufficient to control discomfort.

Post-Procedure Care:

Avoid anti-inflammatory medications as they can interfere with the healing process.

Refrain from strenuous activities for about 48 hours post-injection.

Gentle stretching is recommended immediately after the procedure.

Avoid strenuous activity for the following 2-3 weeks to allow proper healing.

Why IV Administration?

IV administration of nutrients can achieve blood levels that are often impossible with oral supplementation and works instantaneously. This method has gained popularity for treating various conditions effectively.

Conditions that respond well to IV therapy:

  • Asthma
  • Migraine
  • Fatigue
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Depression
  • Infections
  • Allergies
  • Athletic performance
  • Headaches

I’ve been working closely with Dr. Elise Weiss for over 10 years now. It’s amazing how quickly our personal training clients get healthy or through an injury when the pair smart training with Dr. Weiss’ treatments and recommendations. She’s cutting edge on sports medicine treatments and always takes the most gentle and non-invasive approach possible. She helps patients avoid surgeries in many cases. I’ve experienced her treatments first-hand as an athlete myself with PRP, trigger point shots, and shock wave therapy. My injuries improved so much faster and I was able to get back to triathlons and lifting in the gym.

I saw Dr. weiss in April because of a swollen knee, joint locking, unable to kneel comfortably and even trouble walking. 1 treatment, recommended herbal supplements and 3 months later I am a certified yoga instructor. Doing tree pose on both knees. Supervised yoga was my PT. ( A yoga teacher/ dancer recommended Dr. Weiss.) But none of that would have been possible without Dr. Weiss’ initial treatment. Oh and I am 61 years old.
    Much thanks.
